Social media and mobile phones in schools: an essential guide

This resource offers steps you can take to manage social media in school effectively, including setting up an online safety policy.

A practical approach and framework for online safety can empower a school to educate and protect its community in its use of technology. It is always best to start with a policy that’s part of a school’s portfolio of safeguarding policies overseen by the school’s designated safeguarding lead and senior leadership team.

The purpose of such a policy is to safeguard and promote the welfare of all members of the school’s community when using mobile devices or social media. In particular, it is to protect all learners and staff from potential harm, both on and off-site.

Our guidance also includes practical steps on how to deal with malicious online activity.
