Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, said: “For the first time we are seeing behind the national statistics to the very varied levels of attendance across the country. The lowest attendance figures track the worst Covid outbreaks. This shows just how mixed pupils’ experiences have been this term, depending on where they live. Some students are being harder hit by this pandemic than others. The government must take this into account when thinking about tests, exams and assessments next year, and when deciding what levels of support schools and children need.”
