Education unions unite to demand funding clarity at Senedd lobby

Education unions in Wales, led by NAHT Cymru, will today hold a lobby on the steps of the Senedd on Tuesday, November 19 at 12.30, to call on the Welsh Government to ensure that additional funding for education in Wales is allocated directly to schools.

The event aims to address reports that additional funding expected to come to the Welsh Government from Westminster, following increased education spending in England, is not being ring-fenced for education in Wales.

Laura Doel, national secretary for NAHT Cymru, strongly criticised the situation: “This is nothing short of a betrayal of Welsh schools and pupils. We fought hard to secure additional funding from Westminster for education, and now we’re facing the appalling prospect of that money being siphoned off elsewhere. It’s unthinkable that funds meant for our children’s futures could be used to plug other gaps in the budget. The Welsh Government must step up, ring-fence this funding for education, and prove that they value our schools.”

Laura Doel will be available for interviews on the day alongside NAHT Cymru President Chris Parry.

The lobby, supported by NEU, NASUWT, UNISON, and NASUWT, will highlight the urgent need for increased investment in education to address critical funding shortfalls in Welsh schools.

NAHT Cymru’s funding report, Falling Short: The deepening school funding crisis in Wales, published in September, highlights the financial pressures facing Welsh schools.
