NAHT comment on Pride 2022

Natalie Arnett, Senior Equalities Officer at NAHT said: “Whilst important all-year round, this month, which marks the start of Pride, is a wonderful opportunity to put a spotlight on recognising, celebrating and standing in solidarity with the LGBT+ community. At NAHT we have a thriving LGBT+ members network, who are doing some incredible work, not just within their schools, but within NAHT as well.

This year is particularly significant as it marks 50 years since the first Pride march took place in the UK, and I am absolutely delighted that NAHT members will be taking their place in the parade at the end of the month.

It is easy to forget, in the wave of support and rainbow flags everywhere, that it has been less than 20 years since section 28 was revoked here in the UK. However, we know from members that it continues to cast its shadow; and many school leaders and teachers continue to feel concerned to discuss their sexuality, or express themselves openly. It shouldn’t take bravery to be yourself or to stand up for your rights, but sometimes it does. This can have a serious impact on the mental health, happiness and motivation of school staff as well as their pupils.”
