NAHT comments on NGA poll showing lack of BAME school governors

Commenting as the National Governance Association (NGA) today (Tuesday 29 June 2021) release a poll revealing the very low numbers of school governors from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, said:

“It is important for all children to have positive role models from a wide range of backgrounds and ethnicities. This helps to break down stereotypes and prejudice, and encourages children to broaden their horizons and ambitions and fulfil their educational potential.

“Diversity is as important for school governors as it is for other educational leaders as it shows children a variety of career routes, and because a range of backgrounds and viewpoints should be embedded in every aspect of school management and practice.

“Schools have a unique and vital role to play in tackling racism and promoting equality. Positive action by leaders can set the right atmosphere so that the full potential of all staff and children in the school is recognised. We must make sure that education is a sector where people from all backgrounds and experiences feel encouraged to consider school governance as an option.”
