NAHT Cymru comments on exam fee rebate for schools

Exam body WJEC and the Welsh Government announced today (22 June) that they are combining to provide a qualification entry fee rebate for schools of 50%.

Laura Doel, Director of NAHT Cymru said: “Our members have carried out the majority of work and responsibility for awarding grades, and the appeals process has just started. We’ve told the government we believe that the fees this year should be significantly lower as a result. We’re pleased that the pay-back of 50% has been announced, as it’s only right that schools are compensated for their additional workloads.

“When we are hearing that in England, rebates could be at similar levels to last year of only 20-25%, we are pleased WJEC and the Welsh government recognise the enormous input schools have had in awarding these grades and we urge the Westminster government to take note.

“We request, however, that the government in Wales ensures we get our rebate immediately, not in retrospect, when there are far more pressing priorities for that money at the current time, to support young people academically and pastorally.”
