This course considers what research is telling us about the word gap at age 3 and language development.  It explores the implications for educators; particularly in supporting pupils with limited vocabularies.

There is analysis of the focus on developing language and broadening vocabulary in the current Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework, which, by implication, settings should be building on in Key Stages 1 to 4.  There is a focus on the crucial role of adults in presenting strong and consistent models of language, and consideration of some of the things that this may involve, such as subject specific vocabulary. There is also reference to the crucial link between reading and increasing vocabulary.  There is opportunity to reflect on what works in supporting teachers and support staff in their everyday roles.  The course also considers what settings might focus on in working with families to support pupils’ language development and learning.
