NAHT was pleased to send five delegates to this year’s TUC Black Workers’ Conference, which took place in London from 11 to 13 April 2025.
The conference brings together trade unionists from across a wide range of sectors and was an opportunity to come together in solidarity and to organise against racism and discrimination in the workplace and wider society.
In a proud moment for the union, NAHT delegates proposed their first ever motion at the conference. The motion set out a clear call to action, arguing for:
- a proactive, anti-racist approach throughout education
- mandatory anti-racism training for all school staff as part of Keep Children Safe in Education (KCSIE)
- educators, in all phases, to directly counteract and challenge negative stereotypes and prejudicial language
- for the national curriculum and qualification specifications to promote more texts written by authors from diverse cultures and heritage.
The motion was well received by conference attendees and echoed the sentiments of other unions from across education, health, transport and beyond. A recurring theme throughout the weekend was a firm opposition to the rise of far-right ideologies, both in the UK and internationally, and the dangerous narratives that seek to divide our communities.
