NAHT condemns pay cut for school leaders and teachers

In our response to the 31st report of the School Teachers' Review Body, NAHT has urged the government to end the repeated constraints that it has placed on the pay review body.

We urge the government to drop its ill-considered pay freeze that will deliver another real-terms pay cut for school leaders and their staff next year, at a time when inflation, energy costs and retail prices are rising across the economy, and a rise in national insurance is planned.

Our report on the leadership supply crisis showed clearly that the leadership pipeline is broken at all stages, and that government's recent pay policy towards leaders has created new disincentives to those thinking about stepping up to more senior roles.

The STRB is clear that a review of both leaders' and teachers' pay is required. NAHT believes that the MPR, UPR and LPR should be reviewed concurrently in order to restore the career pay continuum, and be supported by an uplift to restore the real value of salaries.
