Financial literacy is critically important in a rapidly changing, complex and digital world. The risks young people face are multiplying as they can spend, trade and gamble at ever younger ages on the devices in their pockets.

The roots of good financial habits are formed early. Primary schools and parents have a key role to play in ensuring children develop strong financial literacy skills. The gap between the knowledge, understanding and experiences of disadvantaged pupils and their more affluent peers is stark by the end of primary school.

In this session, delegates will learn the importance of financial education and its impact on young people, see the research evidence showing what is effective and learn how to evaluate resources for inclusivity and impact. The session will focus on the value of schools and parents working together. It will give strategies, practical advice and examples for engaging parents, particularly those facing the biggest barriers, with this important area

Tom Harbour

Tom Harbour is the Founder and CEO of Learning with Parents, a charity working to narrow the disadvantage gap by supporting all parents to engage in their children’s learning. Tom is also a trustee of the education charity Teach First. He has taught in the UK and Germany and holds a Masters in Education. He is a 2020 Acumen Fellow.

 

Dr Paula Fieldhouse

Dr Paula Fieldhouse is the Maths and Financial Literacy Lead of Learning with Parents and spent more than 10 years as a Primary teacher.  She went on to do a professional doctorate in reducing the transmission of maths anxiety from parents to children. She has designed and created the Financial Literacy programme for Learning with Parents.
