NAHT Cymru comments on changes to A-level grading process in Wales

NAHT Cymru welcomes Welsh Government’s announcement of a ‘no detriment’ rule for A-level students this year, meaning that no student will get an A-level grade lower than their AS grade. We hope this externally verified grade is enough to ensure as fair a result as possible for Welsh students at full A level grade to make sure they are not at a disadvantage compared to young people across the border.

Laura Doel, director of NAHT Cymru, said: “The results students received today (Thursday 13 August 2020) may not be their final grades and we really sympathise for them knowing how hard they have worked to get to this day. This issue could well have been avoided had greater emphasis been put on the professional judgement of those who know our learners best, their own teachers, during the grading process. Having said that we hope that broadening the appeals process will allow grades to be challenged for free.

“We always knew that this process was not going to be an easy one and given the unprecedented times we are living in we must not lose sight of what is important and that is congratulating our students who have reached the culmination of 14 years hard work.”
