Welsh Schools Can't Deliver Aspiration of Govermnent Without Funding Warn Leaders

Commenting on the Plaid Cymru education funding debate in the Senedd today, Laura Doel, national secretary at NAHT Cymru, said:

"It is about time the issue was discussed at the Senedd. For too long schools have gone above and beyond to make do and mend to support their learners but the time has come to say enough is enough.

“There simply is not enough money going to schools to deliver frontline education. Government priorities of raising standards, driving through the new curriculum, new ALN legislation, tackling attendance and behaviour, and promoting the use of the Welsh Language to name just a few seem futile when schools simply don’t have the resources to do this.

“School leaders cannot argue with the aspirations of government, but the system falls down somewhere between those aspirations and the practical challenges schools face.

“Until there is a real commitment to address this; until we stop passing the buck between schools, LAs, Welsh Government and Westminster when it comes to funding, schools are just being set up to fail.

“It is interesting to see so many politicians having so much to say on this issue when it comes to a televised debate, but when we wrote to all Senedd members on this issue, their silence has been deafening.

“Lets hope our members can now count on their support and education is not just being used as a political football for personal gain.”
