NAHT responds to Ofsted's consultation on changes to school inspection in England

NAHT has responded to Ofsted’s consultation on its proposals for school inspection in England, making it clear that these proposals represent nothing more than a repackaging of the current approach to school inspection.

In our response, we have set out school leaders’ opposition to the proposed grading scale and the increased number of graded judgements. We have also made it clear that the proposed traffic light indicators are superficial and simplistic, and the proposed grade descriptors –  ‘toolkits’ – fail to adequately articulate the difference between judgements.

If implemented, these proposals risk increasing the already high stakes in England’s school inspection system – exacerbating risks to the health and well-being of leaders and their staff.

For any school leaders who haven’t yet responded to Ofsted’s consultation, which closes at 11.59pm on 28 April 2025, see our resources and find out more
